Core digital ad metrics and relationships

CPM (Cost Per Mille / 1,000 Impressions)

CPM = (Ad Spend ÷ Impressions) × 1,000

Average cost paid to an ad platform for every one thousand ad impressions delivered.

CPC (Cost Per Click)

CPC = Ad Spend ÷ Clicks

Average cost incurred for each visitor who clicks on your advertisement.

CTR (Click-Through Rate)

CTR (%) = (Clicks ÷ Impressions) × 100

Percentage of people who view your advertisement and proceed to click through to your website.

Mathematical Link Between CPC, CPM and CTR

CPC = CPM ÷ (10 × CTR)

Click costs are an exact mathematical combination of audience auction CPM and creative CTR.

Conversion Rate (CVR) and CPA

CVR (%) = (Conversions ÷ Clicks) × 100 | CPA = Spend ÷ Conversions

The rate at which site visitors convert into paying customers, and your direct ad cost per acquisition.

Deep Dive & Methodology

What is CPM and when does it matter?

CPM (Cost Per Mille) measures the price paid for every 1,000 impressions of your ad. Across major platforms like Meta, TikTok and YouTube, real-time auctions price ad space on impressions rather than clicks.

CPM reflects market competition, audience rarity, and seasonal demand. While a lower CPM means broader reach for the same money, cheap impressions from low-intent placements rarely convert. True efficiency combines an appropriate CPM with high conversion intent.

The mechanics of CPC and CTR

Cost Per Click (CPC) reflects the cost of acquiring one site visit, while Click-Through Rate (CTR) gauges the resonance of your message and creative. On platforms with quality-scoring auctions like Google Ads, higher CTR directly reduces your CPC.

Improving CTR through compelling ad copy and clear value propositions allows you to capture more traffic from the same impression volume without bidding higher.

How conversion rate connects to CPA

Conversion rate (CVR) is the percentage of clicks that result in an order or qualified lead. Cost Per Acquisition (CPA) is total ad spend divided by completed conversions.

Even if your CPC remains flat, doubling your website conversion rate from 1% to 2% cuts your CPA exactly in half. That is why landing page work belongs in every ad optimisation plan, not just bids and budgets.

Metric interdependencies and forecasting limits

All performance metrics are algebraically linked: "CPC = CPM ÷ (10 × CTR)". When CTR doubles at a constant CPM, CPC drops by 50%.

However, budget projections cannot assume infinite linearity. As budgets scale up, ad frequency rises, creative fatigue sets in, and marginal CPCs usually climb. Treat budget forecasts as baseline targets rather than guaranteed outcomes.

// Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about advertising metrics

How is CPM calculated?

Divide total ad spend by total impressions and multiply by 1,000. For instance, spending $5,000 for 100,000 impressions results in ($5,000 ÷ 100,000) × 1,000 = $50 CPM.

What is considered a good CTR?

There is no universal benchmark. CTR varies widely by channel (search, social, display), ad format, targeting and creative. Compare it with your own history on the same channel and format rather than with generic averages.

Is CPC the same as my maximum bid?

No. CPC is what you actually paid per click on average; your maximum bid or bid cap is the most you are willing to pay. In an auction you often pay less than your maximum.

Why do CPMs increase suddenly?

Common reasons include increased auction competition during peak shopping holidays (Q4, Black Friday), narrow audience targeting, high ad fatigue from over-frequency, or declining ad quality scores.

What is the difference between CTR and conversion rate?

CTR measures engagement with the ad creative itself (clicks ÷ views). Conversion rate measures on-site commercial action (purchases or leads ÷ site clicks).

// INDEPENDENT AUDIT

The maths is done. Are the numbers right?

ROAS and CPA are only as accurate as your tracking. Missing or duplicated conversions break every calculation above. Let an independent audit check your measurement.
